Too Close for Comfort by Jack Fellows

A formation of P-38 Lightnings and F-4U Corsairs returning from a mission to the Shortland Islands surprise a Japanese destroyer. Lt. Ben Dale (F-4U) and Lt. Rex Barber attempt to sink the ship by strafing it. Barber's P-38 hits the ship's mast on pullout, shearing three feet off his left wingtip!
Three weeks later Barber would make history by shooting down the bomber of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto over Bougainville Island.
