Encounter With A Jet by Charles Wissig

This print depicts a mission flown by Colonel James Starnes of the 339th Fighter Group on March 30th, 1945. Col. Starnes flying his P-51 Mustang "Tar Heel," was leading a flight of four Mustangs at 2000 feet. They had given chase to a Me262 at low altitude but lost visual contact with the jet. At low altitude the Me262 emitted a dark trail of smoke that was easy to see and follow. Someone called out "White flight break left!" Col. Starnes was leading yellow flight but looked around and saw his wingman, Evergard Wager to the left on fire. White flashes of exploding 30mm canon shells suddenly appeared under his left wing and continued out in front of him. A Me262 flashed by to his left. It is this moment "Encounter With A Jet" depicts.
