Otto Kumm


Otto Kumm, the son of a salesman, joined Hitler's SS in 1931. By the outbreak of WWII, he had attained the rank of SS-Hauptstrumfuhrer and was the commander of 12 Kompanie of "Der Fuhrer" regiment. He took command of III "Der Fuhrer" in May 1940 when the previous commander was seriously wounded. He received the Iron Cross II Class and later, the Iron Cross I class. Kumm was awarded the Knights Cross in February of 1941. On 6th February1945, he became the fourth and last commander of the 1st SS-Panzerdivision, "Leibstandarte SS-Adolf Hitler" until its surrender to American forces at Steyr on the 8th of May. Sentenced to prison after the war, Kumm managed to escape from Dachau and was never recaptured.
