The effectiveness of American pilots flying from bases on Guadalcanal was a key element to the success of the Pacific Campaign. Here a Navy SBD Dauntless lifts off the dirt runway at Henderson Field. Navy, Marine and Air Corps pilots all made up the Cactus Air Force based on "The Canal."
