Final Mission

On May 8, 1944, Capt. Robert S. Johnson was flying his final mission over Germany. He was the leading American ace with 25 kills, but he was still one victory shy of equaling the WWI record of Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker. Suddenly, one of the B-17s being escorted by the 56th Fighter Group exploded, and a Bf-109 passed below Bob Johnson's Thunderbolt. In a matter of moments, the 109 was engaged, finally trying to break off the engagement by diving away. The heavy Thunderbolt quickly caught the fleeing aircraft, its guns scoring hits all over the German machine. The closure rate was too quick and Johnson rolled his P-47 over the top of the disintegrating Messerschmitt. Moments later, kill number 27 also fell under Bob Johnson's guns. The WWI record has been surpassed. Final Mission illustrates kill number 26.
