F-16 Falcon

Mixing It Up At Nine G`s by McCandlish

Two General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcons, flying a Combat Air Patrol mission over eastern Iraq, jettison their wing tanks and turn to engage a pair of Iraqi MiG-25 Foxbats running for the safety of the Iranian border. Pulling over nine times the force of gravity as they accelerate into the turn, vortices of condensation form in the low pressure areas above the fuselage and wings of these agile fighter aircraft, among the best "dogfighters" in the world.

Originally design to intercept America's XB-70 proposal of the late 1950s, the MiG-25 sacrificed maneuverability in favor of a Mach 3.2 airspeed and a rate of clim in excess of 40,000 feet per minute in stripped-down configuration. carrying four "Acrid"missiles, it can not safely exceed 2.8 Mach.

"As a media observer in the back seat of an A-7K, during an intercept training mission with the Arizona Air National Gueard, I had an opportunity to witness the F-16's incredible agility," says Mark McCandlish. "The scenario was inspired by that experience. Unless the MiGs make the border in thirty seconds, their chances of escape are zero."
