F-86 Sabre

Shooter`s Odds by Buckland

"After a split 'S' and dive from 41,000 feet I was able to level off on the deck, going like a bat out of hell. I was closing rapidly on a flight of four MiG- 15s, all centered in my windshield, when suddenly another four MiGs popped into view on my right. As I was quickly adjusting to the fact that I was taking on eight enemy aircraft I saw another eight MiGs on my left. Hell, I had sixteen MiG-15s cornered and my wingman was nowhere in sight." What had started out to be a routine sweep over the Yalu was now getting very sporty. . Not one to miss an opportunity, Parr engaged the closest aircraft and was immediately in a boiling dogfight right on the deck. After destroying two MiGs and damaging another the remaining aircraft fled for the North. Ralph Parr finished the Korean War a double ace, shooting down ten enemy aircraft in just 30 missions over five weeks.
As Capt. Ralph Parr began his second tour in Korea, the war was winding down and it seemed he might never get a shot at a MiG. News reports were guessing a cease-fire at any moment. Two years prior to joining the 4th Fighter Group he had chalked up 165 interdiction and close support missions flying F-80s, but for a fighter pilot the challenge is flying fighters against fighters.
