Agile As The Devil

In October 1917, The Fokker DR 1 began to appear in numbers over the Western Front. The Triplane, or "Dreidecker" as it was also known, possessed a top speed of 115 mph and a superior rate of climb. Though its engine was considered a little underpowered, the DR 1 achieved a level of maneuverability that prompted Manfred Von Richtofen to write of its qualities, "Climbs like an ape, and as agile as the Devil." While the Red Baron scored victories 60-80 in a Fokker DR 1, poor quality control tarnished the promise of this fighter, as many of them broke up in flight and crashed.
