Rooftop Pursuit (Special Edition) by Geoff Nutkins

With his proud V. Gruppe, Lehregeschwader 1 already decimated in the foregoing weeks during the Battle of Britain, Gruppenkommandeur Hauptman Horst Liensberger led the remnants on a fur mission on 27th September 1940 which was to prove to be the death-knell for his Gruppe. Leinsberger and his Bordfunker Wilhelm Kopge, became embroiled in combat at rooftop height with a tenacious opponent, Flying Officer Percy Burton of 249 Squadron. Out of ammunition, Burton sliced the tail off Leinsberger's Messerschmitt 110, sending the aircraft crashing into the ground and killing the two German flyers. In carrying out this act Burton lost control of his Hawker Hurricane, and paid with his life when his machine crashed. It has long been the subject of conjecture that this single act of bravery by the RAF pilot merited the posthumous award of the Victoria Cross.
