Return of the Memphis Belle
In 1943, daring daylight raids over Germany without fighter escort made it almost impossible for American heavy bombers like the B-17 to complete the required twenty-five missions. The 'Memphis Belle' was the first bomber to reach this goal. This aviation art print by Chuck Long depicts the "Memphis Belle" as it returns and pilot Col. Robert Morgan buzzes he tower at his Bassingbourn air base.
